چکیده

Here we investigate the effect of electromagnetic waves with high radio frequency radiation on the antioxidant enzyme activities and seed germination of Zea mays. Three groups of Zea mays seeds were used in this study. The first group was only exposed to RF radiation emitted from the mobile phone simulator. The second group was only exposed to RF radiation emitted from the mobile phone simulator while it was switched off. The third group served as the control. Data showed that the level of germination was significantly higher when seeds were exposed to an electromagnetic field of 900 MHz (EMF), The effects of electromagnetic waves with high frequency (940 MHZ) were studied on Catalase enzyme activity and H2O2 content in leaves of Zea mays. 7-days-old seedlings were subjected to two types of electromagnetic wave treatments for 3,5 or7 days. The two treatments were indicated according to their duration of exposure to the waves, i.e. (i) exposure for 3 hours a day and (ii) 5 hours a day. After 14 days, the Catalase activity in the leaves of the treated plants were measured as an indication of antioxidant enzyme. We also measured the H2O2 as a biomarker in abiotic stress. Here the abiotic stress is to be the electromagnetic field with high frequency (940 MHz). Our results show that electromagnetic field causes an increase in H2O2 content in leaves, compared with the control, sourced from the GSM simulator. Furthermore, catalase enzyme activity increased as a result of exposure to EMF.

Comparing cytogenetic effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields in Brassica napus L and Zea mays L

Many biological effects of exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields(ELF-EMFs) have been documented, but little work carried out on plants. A meiotic study wasperformed on Brassica napus L as C3 plant and Zea mays L as a C4 plant exposed to electromagneticfields. Our investigations were focused on plants grown from wet pretreated seeds with3 and 10 mT for a 4 h exposure time an...

Effects of aluminum toxicity on maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings. Parviz Malekzadeh1*, Reza Sheikhakbari Mehr1 and Ali Asghar Hatamnia2

Aluminum toxicity is one of the most deleterious factors for plant growth in acidic soils because over 50% of the world’s potentially arable lands are acidic. In recent years, considerable research has been conducted to understand the mechanisms of Al toxicity and tolerance in plants. This paper reviews the effects of different concentration of Al on plant shoot, root physiological parameters s...

Effects of manure, municipal waste compost and nitrogen on weed communities in corn (Zea mays L.)

A two year field experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of municipal waste compost (C), composted cattle manure (M), and nitrogen (N) on growth and composition of weeds in a corn field in Shiraz using a split-split plot design with 3 replicates. Visual inspection of the plots showed that the manure treatments neither introduced new weed species nor increased weed density more than t...

Banding Patterns Activity of Antioxidant Enzymes and Physiological Indices in the Maize (Zea mays L.) Genotypes under Water Deficit Stress

Extended Abstract Introduction and Objective: Various environmental stresses, especially water deficit stress have several and major effects on maize growth and production. Drought is one of the abiotic stresses that due to the great variety of rainfall conditions, it is known from Iran as the most important factor limiting the growth and production of crops. Therefore, the effect of water def...
